#23 – Chile, Valparaiso & La Serena

I’ll remember Valparaiso for two reasons – the first is for street art, while the second was falling in love with a group of dogs – and by group of dogs, I’m not talking about a group of girls you find in Lloyds at 2am on a Tuesday – I’m talking actual 4 legged shit-where-I-want wild but awesome dogs.

One can imagine this place in its fully glory in the summer season, unfortunately it was a cold few days for my stay which wasn’t helped by a usually cold shower in the hostel. I stayed 4 or 5 days, though looking back this was certainly enough time to take it all in.

#22 – Chile, Santiago

Game day in Santiago. Red shirts fill the streets of the capital and everyone has that eager look of excitement and hope on the day of a big match… daring to dream. Chile v Spain – a win would see them qualify for the knockout stages of the world cup with a game to spare – and from one of the hardest groups in world cup history.

I gaze out from the balcony at the city, Chile flags can be seen from nearly every building, as cars and buses are tooting on their horns – it echoes around the early morning streets as I slowly wake myself up. Chants can be heard sporadically from the 16th floor of the apartment I am staying in (thanks to my Spanish mate from New Zealand Raul – cheers Raul buddy!) and you can tell the anticipation is building.

So back to Buenos Aires after Uruguay and just in time for the world cup opening few games, which basically means all plans are made to fit around what time the matches were on – the hard life of a football fan. The highlight was definitely watching Hollands´s mauling of Spain 5 – 1 on a huge screen in the centre of BA – with every Argentine becoming more of a dutch fan after each goal.
